Remove or Lower the Sound in Part of a Video

Decide first whether you want silence for a whole clip, silence for a few seconds or just a quieter sound. Each is a different tool, and picking the right one leaves the rest of your video and audio untouched.

Mute, turn down or cut?

Muting silences the sound but keeps the picture and the length. Turning the volume down keeps the sound at a lower level. Cutting removes that part of the video entirely and moves everything after it earlier.

A stray background conversation may only need a few muted seconds; a loud recording may only need less volume; a long dead stretch may be better cut. Say which one you want, because “fix the sound” could mean any of them.

Silence a whole clip

Select the clip and set its volume to zero, or ask the assistant to mute the selected clip. The picture keeps playing. If the project has several clips, make sure you meant just this one.

Play across the edges of the clip. The clips either side keep their own sound, so audio returns as soon as playback leaves the muted clip.

Mute the selected clip. Keep its footage, speed and length unchanged.

Silence just a few seconds

Read the start and end on the current timeline and include both in your request. A timed mute silences that stretch of the project without removing anything. Play just before and after to check where the sound stops and returns.

Re-check the mute after cutting earlier footage, because cuts move later moments on the timeline.

Mute 01:12 to 01:16 without cutting anything. Leave the rest of the sound as it is.

Turn the volume up or down

Choose a percentage below 100 to make a clip quieter, or above 100 to make it louder. Raising volume also raises room noise and background sound; it cannot pull a voice out from behind them.

Distortion already in the recording will not go away with a volume change. If the result sounds harsh after turning it up, back it down and compare in the exported file as well as the preview.

Set the selected clip’s volume to 60%. Do not mute it.

What muting cannot separate

A mute silences everything in its range. It cannot take out only a cough, one speaker or one instrument from a mixed soundtrack; that kind of sound separation is not part of the beta.

If the sound you want gone overlaps important speech, decide whether silence is acceptable or whether you need a dedicated audio repair tool. Keep the original so you can always go back.

Confirm the sound comes back

Play through each muted edge and a section you expect to be audible. That tells a deliberate mute apart from a file whose audio failed to load. If everything is silent, check clip volume, mute ranges and your device’s own sound settings.

Export and listen to the downloaded file. Save a project backup and keep the original if you might want the sound back later.

Frequently asked questions

Does muting delete the picture?

No. The footage and the length stay the same; only the sound in that clip or range is silenced.

Can I silence a few seconds and keep the rest?

Yes. Give the start and end on the current timeline and check that sound returns afterwards.

Can it remove just background noise?

No. The volume and mute tools act on the whole mixed sound and cannot isolate one voice or noise.
